3) Use the right medium. Like the carpenter who only has a hammer and starts to see everything as a nail, it’s easy to fall into the habit of using email for most of your communication.

In recent years, there have been cases of companies announcing staff layoffs by email, or of embarrassing inter-office email correspondence being used as court evidence. Just because you have email and they have email does not mean that this is the best communication medium. Often we are replacing good old-fashioned, face-to-face conversations with email—to our detriment.

Here is a good rule of thumb: if the message involves emotions (attempts to motivate, complaints, or negative comments about other people) or is complex in nature (multi-faceted, requires dialogue, is contentious, etc.), don’t hit ‘Send’—walk down the hall, or pick up the phone.
